19 November 2008 "Kweli 7"

Today, November 19th, is World Toilet Day. I kid you not. I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. (Seriously) Here is an excerpt from an email I received today from the District Health Management Team (DHMT) here in Kilifi.

" Dear ALL
Today is world toilet day celebrated all over the world. In This country the national celebration which will be led by the Minister for Public Health and Sanitation, will be held at Ngamani village, Vitengeni Division in Kilifi.

The DHMT Kilifi in conjunction with Plan international has for the past six months piloted a new approach to community sanitation known as Community Led Total Sanitation which aims at eradicating open defecation in the community. This has been done in 46 Villages and within six months over 3100 pit latrines have been constructed by communities without any external resource assistance.

Five villages have now been declared Open Defacation Free, and Ngamani Village will today receive a certificate from the Minister for attaining that status.

This is to invite all those who may be interested to join us in the celebration today that begins at 10am.
Thank you etc... etc..."

Congratulations, Ngamani Village! It is certainly an honor to host the Minister of Public Health on such an auspicious occasion.

Ah, the sweet smell of progress... I hope you are all able to join with us in your own personal celebrations of World Toilet Day.
