16-17 JUNE 2007: Tsavo Birthday safari

16-17JUN2007 “Tsavo birthday safari”

Our friend Kate was celebrating a birthday, so a group of us decided to safari in Tsavo East for the weekend. As 2-day safaris go, this one was pretty jam-packed with special sightings and unique experiences. We had great fun hanging out, talking about life, joking, etc., and even seeing lots of animals. Here are a few quotes, which do a pretty good job of summing up the mood and the fun we had:

“That cheetah has quite a pert ass!” –Charlotte M. (outspoken doctor obviously missing her boyfriend).

“Holy shit, did you see how close we came to hitting that kudu!?” –Patrick (after our driver swerved to miss one by mere centimeters, never letting off the accelerator, as we careened at >90kph through the park’s dirt roads towards a reported lion.

“Do you think he knows the speed limit in the park is 20kph?” -Kate W. (the birthday girl), followed by – “We’d better see that damn lion!”

“So how many wives do you have?” -Wendy to the Masai warrior as he explained some of his tribe’s customs around a campfire. At least each wife gets her own house, but the husband decides which one he is staying in that night my planting his spear outside the front door.

“So, did you kill a lion?” -Wendy again after the same Masai explained the customary way to earn your first wife, using a spear to revenge your cattle.

“…yes…I did.” -Masai warrior. ‘nuff said

We also were fortunate enough to capture many of the memories on film:

“It’s true – you guys do have different stripes on your butts!”

“Yeah, something tells me that the buffalo wouldn’t like this look.”

“The only guy on the trip and the only one in a skirt…go figure”

“Tourists communing with nature” (we had to plead with our driver to stay back far enough to get this picture!)

“Careful dude - something tells me she has a headache!”

Best Dressed Kat - Silver Backed Jackal

Most Fit Cat (reference pert-bottom) – Cheetah

Most Thinly-Veiled Annoyance– Maneless Lion
